The West of Ireland has always been my first port-of-call when heading for a coastal area. The convenience and beauty of Kerry and Clare are hard to surpass, however, Wicklow is right up there.
Last week, a working visit to Nursing Homes in Kildare somehow led to an adventurous night away in Wicklow. Bray was the first stop. A very last-minute booking was made for the Martello hotel. I chose this because it has a great location central and looks onto the sea, it was cheap- just 75 euro for the night and it had great reviews. It exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the most amazing room, with a full view of the sea, and the comfort was second to none.
It didn’t take long to choose which restaurant for dinner. Pizza Platform, voted best pizza restaurant, was a hands down winner for us. The pizza was amazing, and set us up for our early start. We were up before the crack of dawn. I had seen Instagram videos of the Happy Pear brothers encouraging people to join them for a Swimrise- swim in the sea at Greystones while the sun rises. A very cold, choppy sea took the sleepy looks from our faces!
An incredible experience. It was straight back to the hotel for a hot shower and warm clothes before heading to the Happy Pear cafe for a hearty breakfast.
I have been looking to go to Glendalough for years but never got around to it before. That was our next stop. It did make for a long journey home, but it really was worth it. I loved seeing the round tower in person. The stillness and mirrored reflection of the surroundings from the lake were amazing.
I absolutely loved this trip to Wicklow. An amazing start to my east coast adventures.
