I have come back to Ireland from the UK with a fairly basic business degree.. but I do know that I want to be a Marketeer. The trouble is that i’m not the only one with this aim and there happens to be quite an abundance of graduates in a similar position to me. A fairly rapid realisation I have come to!
My vast research into the career paths of marketing professions (thanks to Linkedin!) has helped me to see what I need to do in order to get to where I want to be. Most marketing managers had some or all of the following:
- An undergraduate degree
- A specific marketing study (a diploma or a masters). Ideally both!
- 2 years working as a Sales or Marketing Assistant
- 2-3 years working in a Marketing Executive position
Fulfill those above requirements and you should be ready for a Marketing Managerial position. The trouble now is getting this experience and level of study. We’ll get there step by step.
I have started studying a Digital Diploma in Professional Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing. This organisation is very well recogised and is based in the UK. That does mean that I must complete the course totally online. A very effective system has been developed to ensure that you have the required support and material to maximise this learning opportunity. I chose this course because of its reputation and because I could get started on it straight away instead of waiting for next year.
I am currently organising to get experience working with a marketing team and will hopefully then get a job as a Marketing Assistant or Coordinator. I have moved back home to Limerick to reduce expenses and for a bit of support- an unusual step after living away for so long. I am very lucky to have access to the University library here for the course.
I felt quite stressed when I came home to find that it wouldn’t be easy to walk into the job that I want. However, all of this has made me realise what steps I need to make in order to get where I want to be.
